HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot has sparked conversations and interest among fans, and now it’s receiving high praise from someone who has played in the wizarding world sandbox, original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus.

Columber is known for helming Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, and he recently called the ambitious adaptation a “spectacular idea,” sharing his excitement for the opportunity it provides to explore untapped elements of J.K. Rowling’s books.

He shared with People: “There’s a certain restriction when you’re making a film. Our film was 2 hours and 40 minutes, and the second one was almost as long. We tried to get as much of the book in as possible.”

But a TV series is a different beast. HBO’s adaptation, which will span ten years and take its time with Rowling’s novels, promises to offer the creative freedom Columbus felt was missing in the films.

The filmmaker said: “The fact that they have the leisure of [multiple] episodes for each book, I think that’s fantastic. You can get all the stuff in the series that we didn’t have an opportunity to do … all these great scenes that we just couldn’t put in the films.”

One example? Peeves the poltergeist. Fans of the books remember this mischievous spirit, but his antics didn’t make the cut in Columbus’s films. With the TV format, scenes like these can finally come to life.

Even with his excitement, Columbus recognized the challenges the new series faces. He previusly said: “They’ve got a bit of a challenge, I think. There’s a certain stylistic quality to those films you either have to depart [from] or you have to embrace.”

Questions about the look of Hogwarts, the use of John Williams’ iconic score, and how the show will differentiate itself from the beloved films looms large. He added: “Do they completely rethink the look of Hogwarts? Do they use the John Williams theme? I don’t know how you do that. But I look forward to seeing it.”

The reboot is being developed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, and the search for the new Harry, Hermione, and Ron is currently underway, with a reported 32,000 children auditioning for the iconic roles.

Principal photography is set to begin this summer, signaling the start of a new chapter in the Harry Potter legacy.

Columbus went on to share his optimism, saying: “I look forward to seeing what they’re trying to do with it. I think it’s great.”

If the series lives up to its potential, it could become the definitive adaptation of this magical novel series.
