Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian & Grogu is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Star Wars projects in years thanks to how well the series has been received by fans.

We now have new details to share with you about the movie’s plot and characters. What was once planned as the fourth season of the hit Disney+ series has evolved into a full-blown movie, with Disney CEO Bob Iger pushing it to the big screen.

I’m excited about the epic continuation of Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures! I just think that Jon Favreau and his team are going to deliver an awesome and exciting Star Wars adventure!

One of the more interesting revelations about the film is that it will see the return of Rotta the Hutt, the son of the infamous Jabba the Hutt.

The character was last seen as a baby in The Clone Wars, and he has undergone a drastic transformation. Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) is playing the character, who has apparently taken an interesting path as he has reportedly become a gladiator.

The report comes from Bespin Bulletin, and Rotta as a gladiator is unlike anything we’ve seen from a Hutt in Star Wars. It’s explained that he’s battle-scarred, wielding a vibroblade or vibrosword, and has shed the image of the sluggish, conniving gangsters we’ve come to associate with his kind.

It’s said that Rotta will have a “buff” look that gives the character a gritty and physical edge.

As for the villain in the film, Embo is a bounty hunter from Dave Filoni’s animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, and he’s reportedly been hired to take Rotta out.

It’s also reported that Embo was hired to take out Rotta by the Hutt twins introduced in The Book of Boba Fett. These two are clearly making plays to solidify their dominance over the remnants of Jabba’s empire, which took a serious hit after his death and the loss of Tatooine to Boba Fett.

Then there are also rumors that the New Republic may also have a vested interest in Rotta. It’s been speculated that Din Djarin is hired to capture the Hutt, potentially setting up a moral conflict for the Mandalorian. Could Sigourney Weaver’s character, Colonel Bishop, be the one issuing the job?

Favreau previously teased the movie, saying: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also praised the story, saying: “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

The film is expected to deliver plenty of nods to Filoni’s animated work. The Mandalorian & Grogu will be released on May 22, 2026.

Will Rotta’s gladiatorial past, Embo’s ruthless pursuit, and the political maneuvers of the New Republic converge into a galaxy-shaking event? It’s only a matter of time before we find out.
