After Robert Eggers‘ Nosferatu had a great run at the box office, the filmmaker announced his next film project with Werwulf, which is gong to be a new take on the werewolf genre, and I’ve been curious to see what he has in store for the movie because we know it’s going to be unique.
The story is said to be set in 13th century England, and it will also feature dialogue that is true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.
We’ve now learned some new details about the project from Eggers go-to cinematographer, Jarin Blaschke, who says that the movie is going to deliver something that’s not been done before.
Blaschke told Den of Geek: “Yeah, we’re doing it now. I can’t tell you a thing. But it’s something that’s not been done before that I’m aware of or not done in this way. So [we’re] just going to test it and see if it works.”
As you know, werewolves have gone through various reimaginings over the years, many of them are just more of the same. The most recent one was Universal’s Wolf Man, which was actually a really good movie and it tried to do something different, but it ultimately had a disappointing box office run.
I’m curious to see what Eggers’ iteration will be but I’m sure it will something very different and authentic to the time period that the story is set in.
The filmmaker put a lot of research in the time periods that his films are set in and the results of that have made his films special. It’s made them awesome movie going experience because a lot of directors don’t put in that kind of time an effort into the details.
Blaschke concludes be saying: “We’re still figuring it out, and I can’t talk about it, [but] the primary candidate has not been done before.”
