I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see Tom Cruise pull off more isanely and incredible stunts in his upcoming film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
The guy who redefines what’s possible for an actor to pull off on screen with every new Mission: Impossible entry. Over the years, he’s pushed himself further than any other actor in the industry. And yet, according to director Christopher McQuarrie, we still haven’t seen the full extent of his insanity.
The next film picks up where Dead Reckoning left off, bringing Cruise’s Ethan Hunt back for what might be the saga’s grand finale.
Take one of the film’s centerpiece stunts which sees Cruise clinging to the wing of a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane, soaring 10,000 feet in the air.
The sequence was shot in South Africa and is set to be one of the most jaw-dropping feats in the franchise. McQuarrie is still in awe of what they pulled off.
He told Empire: “There are stunts in this movie that will melt your brain. There would be a day in Africa—any day in Africa—where Tom would go out and do something that topped anything he had ever done before.”
Cruise has to fully committed to these stunts when he performas them and they push him to the limit. With this one, he blacked out mid-air.
Cruise explained: “When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”
That’s not just dedication… that’s bloody madness. And yet, that’s still not the most intense stunt in the movie! McQuarrie teases that there’s something even more terrifying in the film, something that makes the biplane sequence and even a yet-to-be-seen underwater maelstrom look tame by comparison.
The director isn’t giving specifics, but his reaction says it all: “I truly want to puke thinking about the stress. It was intense.”
Cruise has always treated every Mission: Impossible movie like it’s his last chance to outdo himself. If McQuarrie’s words are anything to go by, The Final Reckoning might just push him, and audiences, beyond their limits, so buckle up!
