Two years ago, Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Spencer) was the second writer to come aboard Star Wars: New Jedi Order after Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson exited the project. Then, just four months ago, after wrapping up his script, or at least coming very close, Knight left the film as well.
Now, the film, which has retained Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as its director, has signed George Nelfi (Ocean’s 12, The Bourne Ultimatum) on to take over as script writer. But some may wonder if these changes in writers mean a complete overhaul or just a reworking of what’s already been written. According to Knight, he believes we will see some of his story in the final draft.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Knight opened up about his experience working within the massive Hollywood franchise that is Star Wars, and his attempt to stand out in what he called “the system.”
Knight explained, “There’s a system, and when you engage with it, you know what it is. You do your bit, you turn in your draft or drafts, as I did, and then the system moves on. I fully expect that substantial amounts of what I did will be in the movie – who knows? But that’s the expectation.”
The project has gone through some growing pains since it was announced in 2023, but it’s said to be moving forward, slowly but surely.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is said to take place 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Daisy Ridley is returning as sequel trilogy heroine Rey Skywalker.
