Marvel’s Thunderbolts* looks like it’s going to be really good movie and I’m actually excited to see it. The movie looks like it’s going to deliver a compelling story filled with interesting characters, that don’t make up your typical superhero team-up.
Director Jake Schreier, best known for indie gems like Robot & Frank and the A24-produced Beef, had one clear vision when stepping into the MCU… Make it different. And according to Florence Pugh, who reprises her role as Yelena Belova, that’s exactly what they did.
She explained to Empire: “It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.”
Thunderbolts* seems to be tapping into something grittier, more character-driven, and emotionally raw. Schreier acknowledges that his work on Beef influenced the film’s tone, saying:
“There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different. There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”
Unlike the Avengers, the Thunderbolts aren’t paragons of heroism or even a well-oiled team. They’re barely functional and barely holding it together.
Pugh went on to talk about Lewis Pullman’s mysterious character and how she realates to him, saying: “Bob is going through what all of them are probably, secretly, going through. Yelena sees parts of herself in him.
“She’s always been someone that wants to look after people. She has a sweet spot for him, and essentially likes looking after him because he’s useless. He’s absolutely useless.”
We all know that’s going to change when “Bob” aka The Sentry’s dark alter ego The Void come out.
Thunderbolts* is set hits theaters on May 2.
