Jon Favreau is developing another project with Disney that will blend animation and live-action. After shaping the Star Wars universe on Disney+ with The Mandalorian and revamping Disney classics like The Jungle Book, Favreau is now bringing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit into the spotlight.
Favreau is set to write and produce the series centered on the classic character for Disney+.
Oswald an essential piece of Disney’s origin story. Created in 1927 by Walt Disney, the mischievous rabbit starred in 27 silent and early sound cartoons, showcasing slapstick humor and inventive animation. Universal eventually took control of the character in 1928.
Forced to move on, Disney responded by creating Mickey Mouse, which is changed animation history. Decades later, bringing Oswald back to Disney became a personal mission for Disney CEO Bob Iger, who secured the rights in 2006.
Now, Favreau is the one bringing him back in a new way. The character is described as a “saucy, self-absorbed bunny,” and Oswald will headline a hybrid live-action/animation series under Favreau’s creative direction.
The news comes as Favreau is currently directing and producing the Star Wars film,The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release in May 2026.
Oswald’s comeback has been a long time coming, and with Favreau at the helm, this series has the potential to reintroduce the character in a really fun, fresh, and cool way.
