It’s been a long wait for The Batman: Part II, and it’s only getting longer. By the time Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel lands in theaters on October 1, 2027, it will have been over five years since Robert Pattinson first donned the cape and cowl.

While the delay has been frustrating for fans, there have been plenty of behind-the-scenes factors slowing things down, from last year’s WGA strikes to reports of Reeves dealing with personal matters.

Pattinson recently spoke about the sequel’s production timeline, joking, “I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be f**ing old Batman by the sequel.”*

Speaking with Technikart Magazine, he confirmed that filming won’t begin until late this year, after he wraps up Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. When pressed for details about that project, Pattinson laughed, “I have absolutely no right to tell you, I can’t even tell you where we’re going to shoot. It’s top secret!”

But when it came to The Batman: Part II, he said: “I’m going to shoot [The Batman Part II] after The Odyssey, at the end of the year. I only have a vague idea of the script.”

Naturally, fans have been wondering if Pattinson’s Dark Knight will face off with Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who was briefly teased in the first film. His answer? “Yeah, no, I don’t know. Potentially…”

Not exactly confirmation, but certainly not denial either.

Keoghan himself has been vocal about wanting to explore his take on the Clown Prince of Crime, saying, “It’s a big one, but I am going to say that, if the opportunity came about, yes, I’d love to explore, and given the opportunity, really dive into it. But I have not been contacted, I’ve not heard anything.”

Keoghan’s Joker was introduced in The Batman during a brief Arkham Asylum scene, where he shared a cryptic exchange with Paul Dano’s Riddler. Warner Bros. later released an extended deleted scene where Batman consults Joker in an attempt to understand the Riddler’s motives.

A full-fledged Joker storyline in The Batman franchise seems like an obvious direction, but Reeves has remained tight-lipped on what his plan for Joker is.

Reflecting on landing the role of Btman, Pattinson described it as almost cosmic fate: “I wait a long time sometimes for a movie or a filmmaker, and yes, there is also a huge element of luck.

“Listen, for The Batman, it was very strange. I never auditioned, and I had never played a superhero before. Two or three years before I got the part, I started thinking about it, when I really had no chance of playing Batman. And then, slowly, it was like an alignment of planets.”

The Batman: Part II will be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.
