Jason Momoa is officially stepping into the role of DC’s intergalactic bastich, Lobo, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn is already hyping up his performance.
Gunn recently took to X to share a personal exchange he had with Momoa, dating back to the day he and Peter Safran were announced as the heads of DC Studios. Apparently, Momoa wasted no time in telling Gunn what he wanted.
Gunn wrote: “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo.”
He followed up with a tease for Momoa’s performance: “I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life & can’t wait to share that with all of you.”
As for the text itself? It was short, enthusiastic, and on-brand for Momoa. “Fucking LOBO,” he wrote. Gunn’s response? “Dude I’ve said you should be Lobo for years, no lie.”
Lobo is one of DC’s most ruthless (and hilarious) antiheroes. A cigar-chomping, space-faring bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia, he’s a walking, talking demolition derby with superhuman strength, near-immortality, and a penchant for causing utter mayhem.
The character was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, and he’s remained a fan favorite thanks to his irreverent, over-the-top personality.
Momoa is a longtime Lobo fan himself, and made it clear that this role is a dream come true. When the casting was confirmed, he shared his excitement on Instagram with the caption, “They called.” He also resurfaced a past interview where he openly campaigned to play the character:
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’ If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah.”
Momoa’s Lobo will make his first appearance in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. The film also features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll.
Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) is directing from a script by Ana Nogueira, adapting Tom King’s 2022 comic run.
With Gunn already singing Momoa’s praises, it sounds like DC fans are in for one hell of a ride when Lobo makes his debut. Buckle up.
