Magic: The Gathering is heading to Bikini Bottom, and not everyone is thrilled about it. Wizards of the Coast has unveiled their latest Secret Lair crossover, featuring SpongeBob SquarePants, and while some fans are excited to get their hands on these cards, others feel like this is a step too far into pop culture chaos.

Collider intially revealed that this SpongeBob-themed Secret Lair set includes three different collections: Legends of Bikini Bottom, which focuses on the show’s most iconic characters; Internet Sensation, which leans heavily into meme culture; and Lands Under the Sea, a colorful showcase of SpongeBob’s world.

The set drops on March 24th, and will be available only while supplies last, which, if history tells us anything, won’t last long.

For Magic players who also happen to be SpongeBob fans, this is a quirky, fun addition. But for many longtime players, it’s another sign that Magic: The Gathering is straying too far from its roots.

When the cards were first revealed, some fans genuinely believed it was a joke. The initial reaction on the Magic: The Gathering subreddit was a mix of confusion and disbelief.

Once the reality set in, the response turned to frustration. One popular sentiment expressed through a SpongeBob meme summed it up: “ight, imma head out.” Another fan posted the classic Mr. Krabs image asking, “Am I really going to defile this grave for money?” before answering, “Of course I am!”

Some players feel like this crossover is another nail in the coffin for Magic’s once rich, high-fantasy identity. One frustrated fan said, “Look what they’re doing to the greatest card game ever.”

Others are simply baffled, questioning who this set is even for, since Magic’s core audience may not be clamoring for Bikini Bottom memes in their decks.

However, not everyone is upset. Secret Lair sets have always been more about novelty and collector appeal rather than competitive gameplay. This isn’t the first time Magic has leaned into pop culture. Previous Secret Lair releases have included Fortnite and Hatsune Miku.

Some fans are fully embracing the absurdity, hoping for specific meme references to make the cut. One enthusiastic supporter commented that they need a “No, this is Patrick” card. For those who love both Magic and SpongeBob, this is just another fun addition to their collection.

At the end of the day, this set is polarizing. Longtime Magic purists see it as another move away from the game’s fantasy roots, while casual players and collectors are happy to add some Bikini Bottom flair to their decks.
