Maybe hardcore Disney movie fans will find something to like in this live-action remake of Snow White, but I thought it was an absolute mess. As someone who grew up loving the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, I couldn’t help by be curious to see how they’d bring it to life in live-action.
That original film from Walt Disney was dark, eerie, and, at times, downright terrifying. It was a visually stunning fairy tale that stuck with me. This remake, though, It strips away everything that made the classic so memorable, leaving behind something safe, bland, and ultimately forgettable.
There were moments where I thought, okay, maybe this is has a chance of getting back on track. A scene would echo the spirit of the 1937 film, and I’d think, maybe this can work. But then, like clockwork, the creative team would make another stupid creative decision that yanked me right out of the experience.
The biggest offender? The ending. The original had this incredible, intense and terrifying climax After the Queen fools Snow White into biting into the apple, she falls into a death-like slumber.
The dwarfs return as the Queen leaves the cottage and give chase, trapping her on a cliff in the middle of a lighting and rain storm. She attemps to roll a boulder onto them, but lightning strikes the cliff before she can do so, causing her to fall to her death with a blood-curdling scream.
It was haunting. It was powerful. It was iconic. It is seared into my memory! This movie scraps that entire sequence! Instead, we get something completely uninspired, a neutered version of a finale that lacks any emotional weight or impact.
I won’t spoil it, but it’s boring. Did they think kids today couldn’t handle an ending as intense as the original? That’s what made it so memorable! That’s what made it great! If you take away the danger, the stakes, and the eerie atmosphere, what’s left?
And don’t even get me started on the CGI dwarves. I have no idea why they thought this was the way to go, but every time they were on screen, I couldn’t help but think, why? That was another huge brain fart made by the creative team. I’m not sure why they went that direction but everytime they were on screen is was distracting.
As for the performances, Rachel Zegler did a fine as Snow White with the material she had to work with, and Gal Gadot, brought some sinister energy to the Evil Queen. But outside of that? Everyone else was just kinda bland and uninteresting.
I also didn’t care for a lot of the new songs that were written for the film. Other than the classic songs from the original, none of the new music really stood out as anything special or iconic. No songs that I can see kids going around singing all the time.
When it was over, I just felt nothing. Disney had a chance to do something exciting, something bold, something that honored the magic of the original. Instead, they gave us this lifeless hollow shell of the original movie.
Some die-hard Disney fans might enjoy it, but I will never watch it again. If you’re looking to watch a great Snow White film, opt for watching the original.
