Amazon is fully invested in God of War. The upcoming live-action adaptation of Santa Monica Studio’s beloved PlayStation franchise has been given a two-season order.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation) confirmed the news in a recent interview with Katee Sackhoff, saying:
“Right now, I’m working on an adaptation of, there’s a video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they’ve asked me to come in.”
For fans of the franchise, this is a major vote of confidence from Amazon. Moore wasn’t the original showrunner for God of War. Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) was initially attached to oversee the series, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (Children of Men, Iron Man).
But they all exited the project last year, making way for Moore to take charge and start from scratch. Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang remain involved as executive producers, ensuring the adaptation stays true to the spirit of the game.
Though Moore is a powerhouse in sci-fi and fantasy television, he admits he’s not much of a gamer. He has a love for old-school arcade classics like Defender, Asteroids, and Centipede, but when it came to God of War, he struggled:
“I took a stab at the game, but couldn’t figure out how to work the controllers, and was confused about the location of the R1 button.”
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his gaming skills, but storytelling is what matters most. And with his experience crafting complex characters and expansive worlds he could be the right person to bring Kratos’ brutal, emotional journey to life.
This isn’t Amazon’s first time dabbling in God of War content. The IP previously appeared in Secret Level, an animated anthology series that briefly featured Kratos alongside other gaming icons like PAC-MAN and Honor of Kings. But a full-fledged live-action adaptation? That’s a whole different beast.
Amazon previously described their vision for the adaptation: “The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.
“When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish.
“Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
With Fallout and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon has shown it’s willing to go all in on ambitious genre projects.
