Hazelight Studios, the team behind the co-op hit It Takes Two, is on the verge of bringing another game to the big screen. Their latest title, Split Fiction, has sparked a big bidding war in Hollywood, with multiple studios trying to land the film rights.
Leading the charge on the adaptation is Story Kitchen, the media company that previously helped shape It Takes Two into a feature film, now in development at Amazon.
At GDC in San Francisco, Story Kitchen is actively assembling a creative team of writers, a director, and potential cast, while major Hollywood players continue to put in offers.
The project is co-written by Hazelight founder and director Josef Fares alongside Sebastian Johansson. Split Fiction is a genre-blending adventure that fuses fantasy and sci-fi elements.
The story follows two authors who find themselves trapped inside the very worlds they created, navigating split-screen combat, platforming mechanics, and unique character abilities.
The game launched on March 6th to critical and commercial success, selling over two million copies in its first week, and number that continues to climb.
Fares first unveiled Split Fiction at the 2024 Game Awards, though development kicked off soon after It Takes Two was released in 2021. Given Hazelight’s track record and the studio’s knack for crafting compelling, cinematic co-op experiences, it’s no surprise that Hollywood is eager to bring Split Fiction to audiences beyond gaming.
