The Mortuary Assistant is making the leap from video game to feature film, and cameras are officially rolling. This nightmarish video game, known for its slow-burn dread and gut-punch scares, is now getting a cinematic treatment and it will dive deep into the demonic.
The upcoming film stars Willa Holland (Arrow) as Rebecca Owens, a recent mortuary school grad who lands a night shift job at the eerily quiet River Fields Mortuary.
Everything seems routine at first with body prep, paperwork, the usual… until things get real weird, real fast. Paul Sparks (Castle Rock) will co-star as Raymond Delver, Rebecca’s boss, who may know more about the sinister forces inside River Fields than he lets on.
If you’ve played the game, you already know it’s more than jump scares and creepy embalming tools. According to reports, the adaptation will be “a new chapter in the story that will expand on the game’s world and mythology, delving deeper into the lore of the demonic entities plaguing River Fields.”
The screenplay comes from Tracee Beebe and Brian Clarke, the game’s original creator, with Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) in the director’s chair. Clarke is thrilled with how the film is shaping up, saying:
“Seeing The Mortuary Assistant evolve over the years from a small prototype to a full feature film is beyond anything I could have imagined as a solo developer. Jeremiah Kipp is an insanely skilled director, and it has been one of the highlights of my life working with him.
“Jeremiah and the entire team at Epic Pictures have done an amazing job capturing the spirit of the game while adding their own unique cinematic flair. It is an honor to see Willa and Paul bring these characters to life along with the rest of the film crew.
“I feel extremely fortunate and can’t wait for fans to see The Mortuary Assistant expand into new territory.”
The original game, published by DreadXP in 2023, struck a chord with horror gamers for its atmosphere and originality.
The film is being produced by Patrick Ewald’s Epic Pictures (via its horror division Dread) and Cole Payne’s Traverse Media. If they stick the landing, this could be one of those rare video game adaptations that not only works—but haunts you long after the credits roll.
