The Marvel character Sentry is finally coming to the MCU, and he’s getting his moment on the big screen in Marvels Thunderbolts*, with actor Lewis Pullman stepping into the role of “Bob” the unstable powerhouse whose alter ego will bring the world to its knees.
Speaking with Numéro, Pullman admitted the weight of taking on this role and it hit him fast:
“Pretty intimidating honestly. Marvel has always occupied a space in my mind as this untouchable echelon of filmmaking. Because they are so good at capturing the magnitude of the universe it almost felt like I’d need a literal spaceship to even have access to a Marvel set.”
That sense of awe quickly turned into personal pressure. Pullman went on to explain:
“So I was terrified of how I might fit into the rhythm of the world and tone. I felt a lot of responsibility to not be a weak link but also try to do my job and bring parts of myself and give worth to my own take on the character.”
As for what went into preparing to embody Sentry, Pullman broke down his approach, saying:
“It definitely was a significantly physically and mentally challenging experience, which I loved. I sort of tried to go about the prep with an athlete mentality.
“On a movie of this scale I figured we would be doing scenes many many times, so a lot of the training and character prep I did wasn’t necessarily what was going to be on display in the film but it was going to help me be more agile and have better stamina, physically and emotionally, when doing certain scenes over and over again and not losing steam.”
Pullman is also confirmed to reprise his role as Sentry in Avengers: Doomsday, a movie that’s sure to be an all-out reality-bending adventure with Battleworld and universe incursions in the mix.
While exact plot details are locked away, Pullman shared his excitement for what’s ahead in a chat with GamesRadar+:
“I’m so excited because, you know, I had to kind of prepare myself for the possibility that this might just be a kind of one-and-done situation. It’s kind of like breaking open a whole new room, and being like, oh my god, [my] house is actually bigger, and now I get to figure out what I do with that space.”
And as for any details about Doomsday? Pullman teased with a grin: “I have no idea. I would love to spoil it.”
However the future unfolds, it’s going to be interesting to see how Sentry’s story arc plays out in the MCU.
