In a recent conversation with Empire, Jurassic World Rebirth star Jonathan Bailey, who plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, spoke about the direction this new installment is taking, saying:
“It really does feel that it’s welcoming people to really celebrate the original film. It has that wonder and awe, while not being scared to re-inject the thrill and the fear.”
That perfect blend of awe and dread is what made the original Jurassic Park so iconic in the first place, and it sounds like Rebirth is aiming squarely for that emotional sweet spot.
The story picks up five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion. With dinosaurs beginning to die off due to an increasingly uninhabitable planet, the only surviving species exist in isolated tropical zones.
The film follows Zora (Scarlett Johansson), Dr. Loomis (Bailey), and Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), a rugged captain, as they venture to a remote island—the former site of the original Jurassic Park lab. And what they find there? Well, let’s just say it’s not friendly. It’s being described as the home of “the worst of the worst” dinosaurs.
Screenwriter David Koepp, returning to the franchise after penning the original Jurassic Park, explained the creative pivot, saying:
“We wanted to recapture the idea that we are in the dinosaurs’ environment. The last few movies were exploring the idea of, ‘Hey, what would it be like if they were in our environment?’ They did that very well, and now we wanted to explore how it felt to go back to theirs.”
I like that shift in the direction of the franchise. While the previous trilogy turned the modern world into a dinosaur sandbox, Rebirth looks to reestablish the primal terror of stepping into their domain.
It’s less about what happens when a raptor shows up on a suburban street and more about being outnumbered and unprepared on a remote island where the laws of nature reign supreme.
Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) is directing the film and alongside Bailey, Johansson, and Ali, the ensemble cast includes Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Ed Skrein.
It’s still a Jurassic movie, so you can expect spectacle, chases, and probably some poor bad decisions from some of the characters. But I like that this one is tapping back into that pulse-pounding, awe-inspiring energy that made Spielberg’s original so good.
The film is set to be released in theaters on July 2nd,
