Marvel fans are still waiting on a trailer for Ironheart, but a new promo image is here to hold us over. It was shared by Empire, and it features Dominique Thorne suited up as Riri Williams in her upgraded armor.
The suit that’s teased here has a scrappy, DIY edge that feels very different from Tony Stark’s polished tech, and there’s a reason for that. Thorn expained:
“She’s dumpster-diving, whereas Tony Stark [was] this bajillionaire. What she’s able to accomplish is remarkable.”
Despite working with limited resources, Riri is clearly holding her own, and she’s even earned the blessing of the original Iron Man himself. Thorne shared that after Ironheart wrapped filming, she had a conversation with Robert Downey Jr., who was supportive of her journey into the MCU spotlight.
“Robert Downey Jr and I spoke just after we wrapped, and he shared some very lovely words about my journey.
“He told me how excited he was and that he’s rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It’s really reassuring to know you’re not embarrassing Iron Man.”
The dynamic between Stark and Riri in the comics, with Stark acting as a mentor, obviously won’t play out the same way in the show, but Thorne’s Riri still seems to embody the spirit of innovation, rebellion, and heart that fans enjoyed about Iron Man.
Brad Winderbaum of Marvel Television also confirmed that the series leans into the kind of tactile world-building that made the original Iron Man movie so memorable.
“There’s a full practical suit. It doesn’t obviously do all the crazy things that the suit does, but we used a lot of techniques that go all the way back to the first Iron Man film, where we actually had a practical suit on set.”
He added that the suit served as a visual anchor for the VFX team.
“Even if it had to do like CG things and open and close and stuff, it had all the perfect lighting reference, so the emulation is just spot on. It’s awesome. I mean I’m sure it’s going to be in the Marvel lobby in a few months.”
As for where Riri’s head is at when the series kicks off, Winderbaum teased some emotional complexity:
“She fought in Wakanda, she fought Namor, she had this great adventure. But the day-to-day struggle is still real. She’s Riri Williams. She’s gonna do what she needs to do to get by for her and her family and everyone else. And it does lead her down some roads.”
According to Marvel’s synopsis, the show picks up with Riri back in her hometown of Chicago, where she uncovers secrets that pit technology against magic, and lead her into dangerous territory.
Alongside Thorne, Ironheart also stars Anthony Ramos as Peter Robbins, Lyric Ross, Regan Aliyah, Alden Ehrenreich, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam, Anji White, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who is still rumored to appear as Mephisto.
Ironheart is set to premiere on Disney+ on June 24, and with that date fast approaching, a full trailer is likely just around the corner.
