Director Chad Stahelski is back to clarify what’s coming next in the John Wick franchise after the brutal events in John Wick: Chapter 4, and it’s not what fans might’ve expected.
According to Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 5 won’t pick up where the last film left off, not in the traditional sense, anyway. He explained:
“The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a [fifth film] is to have a new story that involves John Wick.
“It’s not a continuation with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy f*ck… I gotta see that.’”
So, John Wick: Chapter 5 won’t be another bullet-riddled chase through the underworld court of the High Table. Instead, it sounds like the character is being rebooted with a fresh arc, leaving behind the blood oaths, gold coins, and endless assassins.
What this new direction actually looks like remains a mystery, but Stahelski seems confident it’ll be something fans won’t expect. That sounds really interesting to me and I’m curious to see where the story goes!
And while we wait for that trailer that’ll supposedly make us say “Holy f*ck,” we’ve got more Wick-universe content coming our way. First up is Ballerina, the spinoff film starring Ana de Armas, which hits theaters on June 6.
That movie is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, it follows an assassin from the Ruska Roma organization who’s out for revenge after the murder of her father.
But that’s not all. Two more projects are actively in the works. One is a TV series titled Under the High Table , which looks to dig deeper into the mythology, and the other is an animated prequel exploring Wick’s exit from the assassin world. According to Stahelski:
“The John Wick TV show and the animation are big priorities. Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas for ‘John 5.’”
So while John Wick: Chapter 5 might not be a direct continuation, it’s definitely not coming out of nowhere. It sounds like the plan is to expand the world, plant some narrative seeds, and then jump back into John’s life from a new, interesting, and unique angle.
Whatever direction they take, Stahelski seems confident that it’ll surprise people. And after four stylish, action-packed, world-building Wick films, we’re more than ready to see what “really different” looks like.
