Rumors started making the rounds online last week that Matt Reeves may have quietly stepped away from directing The Batman: Part II after a new listing in Production Weekly didn’t include his name.
Naturally, the internet ran with it because that’s what the internet does. But James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, isn’t having any of it.
When a fan asked him on Threads whether Reeves was still attached, Gunn replied simply:
“Yes. Huh?”
Reeves’ follow-up to his gritty and grounded 2022 The Batman still stars Robert Pattinson as Gotham’s Dark Knight detective. Andy Serkis is expected to return as Alfred, and Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin.
Originally, filming was expected to begin by the end of 2025, but if Production Weekly’s updated listing is to be believed, that timeline has shifted to March 2026. The film currently has its eyes set on an October 2027 release, which would mark five years since the original film hit theaters.
Reeves has previously hinted at personal matters affecting his schedule on the film. In a previous interview, he said: “There’s [been] a lot of stuff going on in my life in the last year or so, and [Colin Farrell has] been such a good friend. [He’s] such a beautiful man.
“We’re still finishing the script, and there have been so many things going on. This next year is about getting into production and getting the movie going.”
It was also previously reported: “If you knew what Matt Reeves was dealing with, you’d leave him alone. I mean, it’s not a Chadwick Boseman situation, but it’s close. You should leave Matt Reeves alone.”
Meanwhile, all eyes are on James Gunn’s own superhero outing with Superman, the first official film in DC Studios’ rebooted cinematic universe.
Warner Bros. co-chair Mike De Luca recently praised the film’s direction and tone, saying:
“We’ve seen an early cut of Superman, and I don’t want to bury the lede, there’s a lot of marketing about to roll out ahead of its release, but he really understood the assignment. [Gunn’s] heart’s in the right place, his aim is true, and we’re really excited about their new version of DC.”
Superman is set to fly into theaters on July 11. And yes, Matt Reeves is still steering the Batmobile.
