It’s been quiet on the Underworld front for a while, but director Len Wiseman has offered a new update on what is currently going in with the franchise, and it involves a TV series that was announced years ago.
Speaking with ComicBook during a press run for Ballerina: From the World of John Wick, Wiseman was asked about the series and if it was still in the works, and thbis was his response:
“I’m just gonna say, because I get asked that all the time, I am. Yes. I always say, ‘No, I can’t really talk about that right now.’ But you know what? Yes. We’re doing a TV series and it’s awesome.
“I’ve been spending the last two years or so [in the project], now I’m finally getting a little bit of time once Ballerina is fully wrapped up.”
When previously talking about the project, he explained:
“The series will be a pretty big departure from the films. I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.”
This series has already had two years of development behind it and there must be some real momentum behind it right now.
Since 2003, Underworld has carved out a moody, leather-clad niche in the action-horror genre, centered around the never-ending war between vampires and Lycans.
Wiseman’s original film introduced us to Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire “Death Dealer” with a penchant for twin pistols and brooding voiceovers, set against a rain-soaked, gothic backdrop. That first movie lit the fuse for a sprawling franchise full of bloodline lore, betrayal, and supernatural showdowns.
Wiseman has remained the creative backbone of the franchise. He directed Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, which deepened the mythology by exploring the origins of the vampire and Lycan clans through the Corvinus bloodline.
From there, he stepped into producer and writer roles, contributing heavily to Rise of the Lycans and Awakening, the latter being the franchise’s biggest box office success, pulling in over $160 million globally.
Now, with the TV series in motion, the franchise has a fresh opportunity to dig even deeper into its lore. Television could be the great format for Underworld, giving room to expand character arcs, explore untapped corners of vampire and Lycan history, and introduce a new generation to the brutal beauty of this supernatural world.
