The future of Wonder Woman in the DCU is starting to take shape, and while there’s no new tiara-wearing warrior just yet, James Gunn is assuring fans that there’s something brewing behind the scenes.
Since Gal Gadot’s reported exit from the role following her last full appearance in Wonder Woman 1984, questions have swirled about what’s next for the iconic Amazon.
With Gunn and Peter Safran rebooting the entire DC universe, it’s no surprise that a recast seems likely. The same has already happened with Superman, after all.
Gunn recently addressed the Wonder Woman topic during a Q&A on Threads. When a fan asked, “Do you have any updates on Wonder Woman?”, Gunn responded with a short—but telling—tease:
“Not to be shared publicly yet but yes. Encouraging.”
While there’s still no announcement about who will wield the Lasso of Truth next, it confirms that Wonder Woman’s place in the DCU is a priority that is moving forward.
That lines up with what Gunn previously said about Paradise Lost, the Wonder Woman prequel series he announced as part of the DCU’s new Chapter One slate.
The show is still in “very active development” and will center on the political and mythical drama of Themyscira long before Diana’s birth.
Even Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made it clear that Wonder Woman isn’t going anywhere. During a Q1 earnings call, he emphasized the character’s importance in the studio’s long-term plans:
“When you look at the major characters with — that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan around DC, that is to build asset value for us globally everywhere in the world, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl. So those are — we look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators.”
So while we may not have a new Wonder Woman just yet, we do know something is coming. Whether through Paradise Lost or a full-on big screen return, the Amazonian warrior’s legacy is being carefully shaped behind the scenes.
