We’re not getting an Awesome Mix soundtrack for Superman, but James Gunn has still managed to inject some serious personality into the DCU’s first movie, just in a different way.
Instead of giving Superman’s story a needle-drop-fueled soundtrack like Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn went character-deep, crafting custom Spotify playlists for each of the film’s core players.
“Spotify asked me to create playlists for many of the characters in Superman, imagining the music each of them listened to. I haven’t had more fun this year,” Gunn shared on X.
Clark Kent listens to Taylor Swift, David Bowie, and Nine Inch Nails, and that’s just scratching the surface of what’s on the Superman playlist. You can check it out here.
Each character’s selection comes with a short recorded intro from Gunn himself, offering a peek into how he sees them, not just as superheroes, but as people with their own inner lives, quirks, and emotional textures.
“I think for each of the characters I had to really think about who they were as people, and imagine what kind of music they would be into,” Gunn explained.
Characters like Lois Lane, Mr. Terrific, and Green Lantern all got their own playlists, and they feel just as curated and thought-through as a script page.
This playlist rollout lines up with Gunn’s approach to the DCU overall by grounding larger-than-life characters in specific, relatable human details.
Superman is the official start of “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” with David Corenswet taking up the cape, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor.
Corenswet recently revealed he reached out to previous Supermen Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin before stepping into the role. “Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try and give you any tips.’ And I think that’s a very Superman thing. Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”
Superman hits theaters on July 11—and until then, you can hit play on Clark Kent’s playlist and get into the headspace of the Man of Steel.
