Last week, it was revealed that Chris Evans is set to return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday and that he will be playing a version of Steve Rogers known as Nomad.
Now we have some new rumored details to share with you in regard to Evans’ return and how the movie will feature an “overwhelming number of variants.”
We later learned that Hayley Atwell will be back as Agent Peggy Carter, and I’ve had my own theories about Robert Downey Jr.’s involvement with the movie and his potential return as Tony Stark, and this new report strengthens that theory.

According to The Cosmic Circus, several actors will pull “double duty” in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Evans is said to “definitely” play the version of Steve Rogers from Avengers: Endgame and it’s believed the movie will visit that timeline after he and Peggy reunited for a happy ending.
It is also being reported that “Evans could be portraying another character in the movie that stands alongside [Robert Downey Jr.s’] Doctor Doom.”
Alex Perez also said: “I heard rumors that his stint as Johnny Storm isn’t necessarily over.”
As for the variants that will be included in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios is said to be giving all of the characters actual purpose in the story rather than treating them like fan-service or throwaway cameos.
The report goes on to say: “What I can tell you is that the secondary antagonists, whoever they may be, according to my sources, are going to be Variants.
“There is going to be an overwhelming number of variants in these movies, a lot more than the characters set to appear in these movies that from Earth-616. Some are going to be good, some are going to be bad, and some are going to be really worse.”
If this is true, then seeing Downey Jr. also return as Tony Stark is very likely. As I said before, if the rest of the Avengers team comes together to fight against Doom, it would make sense to see Tony Stark’s Iron Man return as well.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released in May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive in May 2027.
