Here’s a bit of interesting movie news for you today, Nosferatu director Robert Eggers is reportedly set to take on a remake of the beloved 1986 Jim Henson-directed movie Labyrinth.

According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, this project is being developed with Sony Pictures and the Jim Henson Company. The original Labyrinth has become a cherished classic for its imaginative storytelling and David Bowie’s iconic performance as the Goblin King, Jareth.

The original film follows 16-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) as she navigates a magical, ever-changing maze to rescue her baby brother from Jareth’s clutches.

While Labyrinth was not a major box-office success when it was first released, it gained a loyal fanbase over the years. This was a favorite film of mine when I was a kid and I loved the mix of puppetry and dark fantasy.

Eggers, known for his gothic, atmospheric films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, seems an unconventional choice for a family-oriented fantasy remake. But, his talent for crafting visually striking, deeply immersive worlds might bring a fresh, darker edge to the material.

If the project moves forward, it would mark Eggers’ first film aimed at a broader audience. Unless, that is, if he decides to lean heavily into Labyrinth’s more unsettling undertones.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has tried to revisit the Labyrinth universe. In 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman was hired to write a sequel, with Fede Álvarez later attached to direct. That version never materialized.

In 2020, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson joined the project, co-writing with Maggie Levin, but his sequel also stalled.

Jennifer Connelly, who played Sarah in the original film, expressed interest in returning during a 2021 interview but admitted she wasn’t sure the project would ever come to fruition.

Around the same time, Brian Henson said: “That is a project that we are very excited about, but we can’t talk about it.”

While this new hasn’t been confirmed, it would be interesting if it was true. The director’s trademark gothic style, paired with his attention to period detail and mood, could be really cool and reimagine Labyrinth in a way that honors the original while offering something fresh.

I’d be curious to see if he would keep the family-friendly tone or delve deeper into its darker themes. Either one I’d be fine with, a Labyrinth movie directed by Eggers is a project that is really interesting to me.

What do you think about the possibility of Robert Eggers directing a Labyrinth movie?
