Sony Pictures seems to be pivoting its Marvel movie strategy, moving away from its struggling villain-led universe to a fresh focus on the multiverse of Spider-Man Variants.

This new approach, if true, could breathe new life into the studio’s Marvel efforts after a series of disappointments, setbacks, and bad films.

Sony’s attempts to build its own Marvel franchise outside the MCU did not turn out the way they had hoped. While the Venom trilogy achieved commercial success, each installment faced declining box office returns and lukewarm reviews.

The less said about Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web, the better. These films, which aimed to spotlight Spider-Man’s villains, ended up as some of the biggest superhero movie flops. They crashed and burned.

The failure of Kraven the Hunter in particular appears to have been the final nail in the coffin. It was previously reported that Sony is now stepping away from its villain-centric formula to concentrate on projects involving Spider-Man.

Now, a new rumor shared be scooper @MyTimeToShineH claims Sony’s future Marvel films will revolve solely around Spider-Man Variants. Characters like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Punk, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man 2099, and even Kaine could take center stage, alongside the likes of Spider-Woman and other spider-themed heroes.

This shift feels like it would be a better direction to take things. Spider-Man’s multiverse has always been filled with creative potential. Just look at the massive success of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The studio could tap into these characters while leaving Peter Parker to thrive in the MCU under Marvel Studios’ guidance.

This strategy could also allow Sony to explore lesser-known heroes and villains without the pressure of trying to replicate the MCU’s massive success. However, without a solid creative team steering the ship, the same mistakes that plagued earlier films could ruin this new direction.

They really need to figure out how to craft great stories for the Marvel movies that they make and that starts with bringing in the right talent and less interference from the studio, because they don’t know what they’re doing. But they are in denial and they think they’ve made good films.

Sony Pictures’ outgoing CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently weighed in on the studio’s Marvel struggles, blaming critics for the poor reception, which is funny because no one care what critics have to say anymore.

When talking about Kraven the Hunter, Vinciquerra called it “probably the worst launch we had in the 7 1/2 years [I’ve been at Sony],” adding, “That didn’t work out very well, which I still don’t understand, because the film is not a bad film.”

He also defended Madame Web, saying, “The press just crucified it. It was not a bad film, and it did great on Netflix.” Vinciquerra claimed the same fate befell the Venom movies, arguing, “These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.”

Fact of the matter is these films need great storytelling that resonates with audiences. If Sony can execute this pivot effectively, the Spider-Verse approach could be a win for them!

The studio can explore a variety of Spider-Man-inspired stories and that could keep audiences invested. But the key to success is dependent on bringing in the right creative teams to ensure these characters don’t meet the same fate as the previously made films.

What do you think about this possible new direction for the studio?
