The global anime industry has hit a historic high, achieving massive growth in 2023. A report from Parrot Analytics reveals a remarkable 14% surge compared to the previous year, proving that anime is a strong force in entertainment.
When I was growing up, anime was a niche subculture, but it has broken out of its Japanese origins to become a global phenomenon, which is fueled by rapid technological advancements, growing international accessibility, and a strong appetite from a diverse fan base.
While Japan remains the epicenter of anime production, the foreign market has overtaken domestic consumption, accounting for 51.5% of the industry’s total market value.
Revenue streams extend far beyond streaming, encompassing merchandise, music, gaming, and live events. Together, Japan and North America contribute an impressive 72% of the industry’s overall profits.
Streaming platforms, which are a crucial driver of anime’s global reach, also played a big role in this growth. Netflix leads the charge, generating over $2 billion in anime revenue in 2023. Crunchyroll follows with $1 billion, trailed by Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and MAX.
As technology continues to bridge the gap between East and West, fans are enjoying quicker access to new episodes and manga chapters, often released globally within hours.
The pandemic initially ignited a surge in anime consumption as people sought escapism during lockdowns. This hasn’t gone away; instead, it has solidified. That’s when my dad started watching anime, and he hasn’t stopped. He’s addicted.
Gen Z has embraced anime wholeheartedly, with studies showing many young viewers prefer anime to traditional entertainment like the National Football League. Even the NFL has leaned into anime’s popularity, collaborating with franchises like One Piece and creating anime-inspired team trailers.

“Anime is a major driver of ancillary businesses such as consumer products, gaming, and live events, creating ripple effects across the global economy. By tapping into these interconnected industries, the anime sector can unlock immense economic potential and foster innovation that extends far beyond traditional media.”
