The stakes couldn’t be higher for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and according to director Christopher McQuarrie, the team has outdone itself yet again.
The upcoming eighth chapter of the franchise will once again push boundaries of Tom Cruise, and it promises to leave audiences breathless… literally.
While speaking to Empire, McQuarrie revealed, “We had a small screening, and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack.’ And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.’”
While he didn’t specify which sequence elicited such a visceral reaction, fans of the series can likely take a wild guess based on the jaw-dropping stunts teased in the trailer.
One of them features Tom Cruise dangling from a biplane, engaged in brutal hand-to-hand combat, and the other one sees him navigating a harrowing underwater scene.
Even Cruise, known for his daredevilry, had moments of hesitation while preparing for some of these stunts, as highlighted in behind-the-scenes footage. If Cruise is feeling the pressure, you know the stakes are high.
I’m very excited about this movie and it promises to deliver a spectacular ending to this epic story!
In addition to Cruise, Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, and Angela Bassett are reprising their roles.
Other newcomers to the franchise include Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Katy O’Brian and Hannah Waddingham.
The film hits theaters on May 23, 2025.
