The Grammy award-winning artist offered heartfelt insights into her struggles, resilience, and transformation on the latest episode of Keke Palmer’s podcast. The episode delved deep into Lizzo’s personal and professional journey, providing fans with an intimate glimpse of the superstar’s life behind the headlines.
Last year, Lizzo was blindsided by a lawsuit by a few of her former dancers. The lawsuit included harassment, assault, false imprisonment, weight shaming, creating a hostile work environment and more. Reflecting on a particularly challenging period, Lizzo shared the profound impact of betrayal.
“I’m not going to cry. I said I wasn’t going to cry because I’m not a f***ing victim,” she said, fighting back tears. “That time, that period of my life was very dark because of the feeling of betrayal. Not because I thought I did something wrong, but because the wind was knocked out of me by people I cared about.”
Lizzo admitted the experience changed her, leaving her feeling less free-spirited and more guarded. She also spoke candidly about her mental health. She revealed that from 2018 to 2021, she battled severe depression while navigating the pressures of newfound fame.
“Am I always smiley and happy-go-lucky? No, I’m not. I’m a human being,” Lizzo emphasized in their conversation. “I was working so hard through it all… Going from selling merch out of my car to adding fame on top of that quadrupled the pressure.”
Lizzo’s journey is one of resilience. She expressed gratitude for the lessons learned, crediting her faith and family for her strength.
“My great-grandmama prayed over me, and I feel like I’m going to be okay,” she said with conviction. “This lesson was massive, but I love the version of me that came out of all of this. I really, really do.”
Palmer’s thoughtful approach and interview style provided a safe space for Lizzo to unpack her experiences, offering listeners an inspiring narrative of growth and self-love. The conversation also spotlighted universal themes of betrayal, resilience, and healing that many celebrities face when adjusting to fame.
