Tony Gilroy’s mission with Andor has always been bigger than just telling a great story about rebellion and espionage. From the beginning, he’s treated the show like a proof-of-concept, a way to stretch the boundaries of Star Wars storytelling.
Now, it sounds like the franchise might be taking that challenge seriously y… with horror.
At a recent Andor event in London, just ahead of the second season’s premiere, Gilroy spoke to Business Insider and was asked about a genre idea he had tossed around in the past: a Star Wars horror project.
His response was: “They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.”
I seriously hope that’s true! There must be some weight to it, especially because it comes from someone who would have knowledge of what Lucasfilm is doing.
In a previous interview, Gilroy said: “I always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie.
“I think the first thing I said to Kathy [Kennedy] when she said they wanted to open a line, was, ‘Could you do a courtroom drama? And why not?’ We’ve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and it’s up to other people now to find another way to do it.”
So, if a horror-based Star Wars project is actually in the works, it doesn’t look like Gilroy is involved. He seems content with wrapping his contribution to the galaxy far, far away once Andor finishes its run.
Still, if this new project actually makes it across the finish line, always a big “if” in the Star Wars production pipeline, it’ll be really interesting to see what the story will be.
