Great news for fans of Dark Winds as AMC has officially renewed the hit thriller for a fourth season. The announcement comes just weeks before the premiere of Season 3 on March 9th.
Season 4, like the upcoming third season, will feature eight episodes and is set to begin filming in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in March. The new season is expected to hit screens in 2026. The renewal isn’t much of a surprise as the show has been a pretty big hit with audiences.
On top of that, it’s revealed thatDark Winds star and executive producer Zahn McClarnon will make his directorial debut in Season 4. McClarnon leads the cast as Lt. Joe Leaphorn, alongside Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee, Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito, and Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn.
The series is set in the 1970s, and the story follows the Navajo Tribal Police as they navigate increasingly violent crimes on the reservation.
Season 3 picks up six months after the events of the previous season. Leaphorn and Chee are investigating the mysterious disappearance of two boys—an abandoned bicycle and a blood-stained patch of ground the only clues left behind.
Meanwhile, Manuelito, now 500 miles from home working with the Border Patrol, stumbles upon a human and drug smuggling conspiracy with far-reaching consequences.
The new season also brings a lineup of guest stars, including Jenna Elfman as FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington, Bruce Greenwood as Tom Spenser, and Raoul Max Trujillo as Budge. Returning cast members include A Martinez as Acting Chief Gordo Sena and Jeri Ryan as Rosemary Vines.
Based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series, Dark Winds was created by Graham Roland and boasts an impressive roster of executive producers, including McClarnon, John Wirth, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo, Jim Chory, Vince Gerardis, and Anne Hillerman.
