Tony Gilroy’s name is tied to projects like the Jason Bourne films and the Oscar-nominated thriller Michael Clayton. But despite that impressive résumé, he says Andor stands apart as the most meaningful project of his career.

In a recent conversation with The Playlist, while promoting the second and final season of the Star Wars series, Gilroy reflected on what Andor has meant to him as a creator and a storyteller growing within a massive franchise.

“I don’t think I’ll ever have a chance to work on anything as important as this. This has been the most important thing I’ll ever get to do in terms of how much imagination went into it, how much work went into it, how much of a better writer I became doing it, how much I learned doing it, and how important the subject matter was and the scale of it. It’s hard to imagine that a situation like this would ever come around again.”

Andor clearly struck a different chord with Gilroy than anything he’s ever worked on before, and the fans have loved what he’s delivered. From its first season in 2022, the series was embraced for its maturity, restraint, and bold shift away from the more traditional Star Wars formula. No lightsabers. No Jedi. Just the rising tide of rebellion and the very human cost behind it.

Andor earned widespread praise and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, which is something not often seen with Star Wars content on the awards circuit. It set a new standard for Star Wars project and what stories set in this universe could be.

Season 2 will wrap up the saga, with Gilroy bowing out of the Star Wars sandbox afterward. The final batch of episodes is set to drop on Disney+ in April, with a release plan that rolls out three episodes at a time over four weeks.

His work on Andor showed how a franchise deeply rooted in nostalgia could still grow, adapt, and challenge audiences. He didn’t rely on Easter eggs or cameos to create weight, he trusted the story, the characters, and the themes to do the heavy lifting.

The twelve episodes of second season will carry the story of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and the emerging rebel alliance over the climactic four years that lead to the discovery of The Death Star and the events of Rogue One.

“Season One followed Cassian’s reluctant journey from cynical nobody to revolutionary volunteer. Andor Season Two will see him transform from soldier to leader to hero on the way to his epic destiny. From the very first scene, Cassian’s story has activated an ever-widening ensemble of allies and enemies.

“Season Two will see these relationships intensify as the horizon of galactic war draws near. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices, and conflicting agendas will become profound. Who will live to see their dream realized? Who will realize what the dream cost?”

Season 2 features the return of Ben Mendelsohn as Imperial officer Orson Krennic and Alan Tudyk as the acerbic reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO. Along with Luna, the returning cast includes Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu and Forest Whitaker.

Andor Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on April 22, 2025.
