It’s been nearly three years since Warner Bros. threw the Batgirl movie in the trash for a tax write off, but some fans of the DC Universe still haven’t let go of what we could’ve experienced with this movie.
Well, now an art department crew member has reignited that lingering frustration, revealing that the movie was, in fact, fully completed… visual effects and all.
Annie Mitchell, an art department assistant on the film, revealed in a TikTok comment: “It’s insane that they scrapped it. It was literally completely finished—VFX and everything. I definitely believe it still exists, though. Really hoping someone leaks it in 10 years.”
Mitchell’s comment came in response to a TikTok video asking users to share their favorite piece of “lost media.”
The video creator added: “It’s actually so soul-crushing to see the amount of love and effort put into a film only for it to be turned into a tax write-off and completely deleted from existence,”
Mitchell also shared some behind-the-scenes insight about the scale of the production, saying: “I was in the set decoration department for the whole movie. For things like the huge street transformation we did to make a random Glasgow street into Gotham.”
The scrapped film starred Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, Gotham’s vigilante Batgirl and the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon.
The movie was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life), and it boasted a star-studded cast, including J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser, Michael Keaton, and Ivory Aquino.
Batgirl was scrapped as part of Warner Bros.’ cost-cutting measures under CEO David Zaslav. The decisoin sparked outrage among fans, especially after learning how much work had already been done on the project.
It’s pretty crazy to learn that the film was actually completely finished! It’s so stupid that they didn’t release it.
