It looks like Captain America: Brave New World might have cost Marvel Studios a lot more than originally reported.
A recent report from THR put the film’s production budget at “around $180 million, less than many other Marvel movies.” However, according to The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider, that number may no longer be accurate.
He’s reporting that the extensive reshoots and marketing costs could have driven the film’s budget up to $300 million. If that figure is correct, Brave New World would need to make at least $600 million just to break even.
That’s a steep hill to climb, especially given the film’s early reception. Most critics haven’t been particularly kind to the movie with the movie currently sitting at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.
But despite that, audiences seem to be responding more positively, and the film’s opening weekend projections were solid. If it manages to pull in anywhere close to $200 million worldwide over the President’s Day holiday, it could stay in the fight.
While Brave New World is sure to be a success, it’s unlikely to come close to what Deadpool & Wolverine brought.
Outside of Brave New World, Sneider also shared that Marvel is “very happy” with how The Fantastic Four: First Steps has turned out. But when it comes to Thunderbolts, the studio is reportedly a bit more “nervous.”
With the MCU in a transition period, every project counts. Brave New World might not be the massive hit Marvel was hoping for, but if it can hold its ground at the box office, it will be a win for Marvel.
