Cobra Kai may have kicked its final roundhouse with the series now concluded, but don’t expect the Karate Kid universe to stay down for long.
With the show’s massive success, from its humble beginnings on YouTube Red to becoming a Netflix powerhouse, spinoff projects seem like a no-brainer, and according to the show’s creators, one idea that’s already been floated involves fan-favorite duo Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo).
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg opened up about the series finale and where things could go next. When they were pitched a concept about continuing Hawk and Demetri’s journey as they head off to Caltech, the team’s response was surprising.
Heald teased: “That may or may not be something we’ve already talked about.” Hurwitz added, “There may actually be a document, a very thorough document, that says what you just said.”
The pitch reads: “This action-comedy follows Hawk and Demetri as they navigate college life at Caltech, work on cool robotics projects, and occasionally kick some karate butt. Think Real Genius meets Cobra Kai.”
So, not only has this idea been discussed, it sounds like there’s already a blueprint for it.
A Hawk and Demetri spinoff series would mark a shift in tone, leaning more into comedy with a college backdrop. That could be a perfect fit for the Cobra Kai writing team, given their experience with irreverent humor in projects like Harold & Kumar and American Pie.
It also makes sense from a fan perspective as Hawk has long been one of the show’s most popular characters, and pairing him with Demetri’s dry wit could create a fun buddy-comedy dynamic.
While Cobra Kai has always blended comedy, drama, and action, a college setting doesn’t naturally lend itself to dojo showdowns. Sure, the show could throw in some fraternity fights, but you know what? Shifting away from the martial arts element could work for a concept like this. Sometime karate isn’t life.
I’d be up for a series like this. I think it could be a lot of fun! These are a couple of fun characters that have a great dynamic, and it could work!
The creators have also teased spinoffs for a Young Mr. Miyagi series and a project that centers on Sensei Raymond ‘Stingray’ Porter (Paul Walter Hauser);
For now, no Cobra Kai spinoffs are officially greenlit. But given the success of Cobra Kai, don’t be surprised if we see a spinoff or two that continue the stories of some characters from the series.
