Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal have more than just a new movie in common, they’ve both suited up as some of Marvel’s toughest heroes. Now starring together again in The Accountant 2, the two actors recently shared their picks for their favorite Marvel characters, and the answers are just as fitting as you might expect.
Affleck, who played Matt Murdock in 2003’s Daredevil, and Bernthal, the MCU’s brutal Frank Castle from Daredevil Season 2 and The Punisher, sat down with Complex for an interview. When asked to name their all-time favorite Marvel characters, Affleck went straight for Wolverine, while Bernthal stayed loyal to his own alter ego, picking the Punisher.
“I didn’t say Daredevil, you know what I mean,” Affleck joked after hearing Bernthal’s choice. “Are you the best performer in the history of Marvel? Yes.”
Bernthal laughed it off, adding, “I’m not going there, I just think the Punisher, overall, is the best Marvel character.”
Affleck thought it over for a second, then added, “Well, there you go. I’m thinking back to like when I read the comics. I like Punisher, but I think Wolverine…”
Seeing these two talk about Marvel is a cool moment, especially considering how much history they both have with the brand. Affleck’s Daredevil may have been a one-off, but it helped pave the way for comic book movies in the early 2000s.
Bernthal, meanwhile, has left a massive mark as the Punisher and recently returned to the role for Daredevil: Born Again. He’s even got a Punisher Disney+ special on the way, though no release date has been announced yet.
The Accountant 2 is now playing in theaters, with Affleck and Bernthal reprising their roles as Christian Wolff and Braxton. The sequel is directed by Gavin O’Connor and also stars Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, J.K. Simmons, and Allison Robertson.
