With James Gunn’s Superman flying into theaters soon, the cast is already imagining what the broader DC Universe could look like. While Batman is the obvious answer for who fans want to see cross paths with the Man of Steel, actor David Corenswet has his eyes on someone else in the Bat-family… Robin.
When ComicBook asked Corenswet which DC character he was most excited to see in the new universe, he offered this thoughtful response:
“I think Batman has got to be my answer, but it just occurred to me that one of the Robins – one of the iterations of Robin – would be interesting, because I think Superman has good dad energy.
“And although it’s been explored – his relationship with his sons in certain iterations – I feel like it would be interesting to have him as sort of an uncle figure to Batman’s younger protégé.”
This is a fun idea that fits right in with what DC Studios has already teased. Gunn has confirmed his version of Batman will be introduced alongside Damian Wayne, the Robin known for being Batman’s biological son with Talia al Ghul.
Unlike the more grounded Robins of the past, Damian is deadly, sharp-tongued, and raised by the League of Assassins. That alone would make for a fascinating clash with Superman’s hopeful, morally grounded worldview.
Corenswet’s idea also opens the door the Super Sons. In the comics, Superman’s son Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne form a reluctant but effective crime-fighting duo. Their dynamic with Damian’s brash assassin instincts rubbing against Jon’s wholesome idealism offered some fun and emotional moments.
Now, introducing Jon Kent would mean weaving in time dilation or other comic-book weirdness, since Corenswet’s Superman is still early in his journey. But even without Jon, giving Damian some meaningful time with Superman could reshape how fans view both characters. Damian needs a moral compass. Superman is the moral compass.
There’s no confirmed timeline for when Batman and Robin will make their debut in the new DCU, but clearly, the seeds are already being planted, both on screen and in the minds of the cast.
