I had an absolute blast watching the recently released film Death of a Unicorn. It’s one of those horror movies that knows exactly what it wants to be… absurd, wild, and completely unhinged in the best way possible.

It’s not just chaos for chaos’ sake, though. Beneath the blood and bizarre plot beats, there’s a really fun story and some sharp characters that make the whole thing work.

The premise alone had me grinning from ear to ear, Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega play a father-daughter duo who hit and kill a unicorn with their car on the way to a retreat hosted by Rudd’s shady billionaire boss, who is dying from cancer.

They shove the unicorn in the back of their care and after a series of events, things spiral quickly when his boss discovers the unicorn has healing powers and is looking to profit off the creature’s remains.

That decision, of course, unleashes hell in the form of rampaging, violent unicorns out for revenge. If that doesn’t get your attention, I don’t know what will.

What I loved most is how much the movie leans into its own ridiculousness. It doesn’t hold back. There’s this B-movie monster vibe running through the whole thing, silly, yes, but also stylish and confident.

The unicorns are complete nightmares. The creature designs are gnarly in all the right ways. These things are gnashing, otherworldly beasts, but they’re also embeded with hints of the glittery fairy tale creatures we’re all familiar with.

You can definitley tell the creative team had fun twisting the traditional unicorn into something grotesque and cool.

The tone walks a fun line between horror and comedy. Paul Rudd brings his signature charm but, he’s also slightlty unlikeable. Jenna Ortega keeps up perfectly with a mix of heart and teenage grit. Their dynamic gives the story a center to latch onto.

This movie is not shy about getting wild. It knows it’s a ride and invites you to just hang on and enjoy it. Death of a Unicorn just goes for it. It’s weird, bloody, and kind of beautiful in its own deranged way.
