Disney’s latest live-action Snow White remake, is now on the box office radar, but the numbers aren’t looking too promising. Early projections put the film’s opening weekend at around $63 million – $70 million, with some sources leaning closer to $65 million.

Normally, that wouldn’t be a huge disaster, especially with international numbers, but for a film of this scale, it’s far from ideal.

As you may have heard, Snow White comes with a massive price tag. According to Forbes, the film’s budget rocketed to $269.4 million by the end of 2023, though recent reports suggest it currently sits around $250 million. But that doesn’t include the marketing costs.

Either way, it means Snow White needs to be a major hit to avoid losing the studios money. If those opening numbers hold, Disney could be looking at its next big flop.

Snow White has been steeped in controversy from early on, and it all started when Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, who isn’t even involved with the film, slammed the remake as “backwards.” His comments stirred up debate, leading Disney to respond with this official statement:

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

Then came the trailer, audiences were met with… CGI humanoid characters that left a lot of people scratching their heads. Then there were Rachel Zegler’s comments, which fueled further controversy over the film’s modernized take on the original story.

The story follows a princess who is rescued by seven CGI dwarf miners, Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy, who make Snow White part of their household after she’s exiled into a dangerous forest by her wicked queen (Gal Gadot).

The film also stars Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, Martin Klebba as Grumpy, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) directs Snow White from a screenplay by Barbie director Greta Gerwig and playwright Erin Cressida Wilson.

Snow White is now set to be released in theaters on March 21, 2025. We’ll just have to wait and see if audiences embrace this new take on the story, or if it will crash and burn.
