Giancarlo Esposito has built a career out of playing some of the most captivating villains in modern entertainment. From his chilling turn as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad to his more recent roles in The Mandalorian, The Electric State and Captain America: Brave New World, Esposito seems to have mastered the art of quiet menace.

He recently appeared as Sidewinder in the MCU, the leader of the Serpent Society, but fans weren’t exactly thrilled with the casting. After years of speculation that he might take on a role like Magneto or Mister Sinister, some felt his talents were wasted on such a minor character.

But what about the DC Universe? Could he get a second chance at playing a truly iconic villain? Esposito certainly hopes so.

The actor has now expressed interest in taking on the role of the cold-hearted Batman villain, Mr. Freeze. For years, Victor Fries has been rumored for a return to the big screen, with speculation that he could appear in either Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe or James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold.

While I think he would be great in the role, at this point, casting Esposito in yet another villain role might be too on the nose. Over the past few years, he’s taken on so many antagonistic roles that the novelty might not hit as hard as it once would have. But, I can see him in the role.

For those unfamiliar, Dr. Victor Fries, better known as Mr. Freeze, was once a brilliant cryogenics expert. His descent into crime began when a lab accident left him unable to survive outside of a sub-zero suit. His entire existence revolves around his desperation to save his terminally ill wife, Nora, whom he keeps frozen in the hopes of one day curing her.

Freeze first appeared as “Mr. Zero” in Batman #121 (1959), later evolving into the version most fans know today. The character became a household name thanks to Batman: The Animated Series, which gave him a tragic, compelling backstory. And, of course, there’s Arnold Schwarzenegger’s infamously pun-filled take in 1997’s Batman & Robin.

While there’s no official confirmation of Freeze appearing in The Batman: Part II, Reeves previously shared his thoughts on adapting the character in a grounded way:

“In my view, I just feel drawn to finding the grounded version of everything. So to me, it would be a challenge in an interesting way to try and figure out how that could happen, even the idea of something like Mr. Freeze, that is such a great story, right?”

“I think there’s actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great. So, I love the fantastical side of Batman, but this iteration, obviously, while being, to me, I think it is very comics faithful, but I don’t think that this one is necessarily, it doesn’t lean as hard into the fantastical, I guess.”

“But I think to me what would be interesting would be to try and unwind the fantastical and see, well, how could that make sense here? And so that’s kind of my view, how I see it.”

With Esposito throwing his name in the mix, what do you think about him in the role of Freeze?
