Holy crap! It’s actually happening! After nearly 40 years of speculation, false starts, rumors, reports, and fan hopes, Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with Goonies 2.
The studio has hired Old Henry director Potsy Ponciroli to write the script, with Steven Spielberg producing under Amblin Entertainment. Joining him are Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, and original Goonies screenwriter Chris Columbus. Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce.
The project is still in its early stages, with no director or plot details revealed yet. But the fact that the wheels are finally turning is enough to send a jolt of excitement through fans of the 1985 classic.
It will be interesting to see what kind of story they tell, and what members of the original cast they end up bringing back.

The original Goonies, directed by Richard Donner, followed a ragtag group of kids who stumbled upon a centuries-old treasure map, leading them on an unforgettable adventure.
Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton, the film became a box office success, and over the years, its legacy has only grown.
Ke Huy Quan, who’s experienced a major career resurgence thanks to his Oscar-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, recently addressed the idea at the premiere of his new action film Love Hurts—with Corey Feldman right by his side.
“It’s one of the most asked questions in my life,” Quan said. “I would love for it to happen.”
Feldman chimed in, embracing the spirit of the original film: “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”
For years, the biggest obstacle to a sequel was Richard Donner himself, who often expressed interest but never found the right time or story before his passing in 2021. Now, with Spielberg, Columbus, and the surviving cast still passionate about the project, it seems Goonies 2 might finally be a reality.
