As you know, the DC Cinematic Universe is in the middle of a major transformation under James Gunn and Peter Safran, with a new slate of projects that will shape the future of the franchise.
One of the upcoming animated series is Starfire, and it has now been confirmed to exist outside the main DCU continuity as part of the Elseworlds label.
Gunn recently took to Threads to clarify the show’s place in the larger DC landscape, responding to a fan with: “Starfire is Elseworlds, as are most our family animated shows.”
That also puts it in the same category as Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker, meaning it’s free to tell its own story without worrying about tying into the broader DCU timeline.
For those unfamiliar, Elseworlds is DC’s brand for stories that stand apart from the main continuity, offering fresh takes on familiar characters and worlds. While the label has been primarily associated with live-action films so far, it looks like many of the upcoming animated series will also exist under the Elseworlds banner.
Starfire is one of three recently announced “younger-skewed” animated projects, alongside My Adventures with Green Lantern and DC Super Powers. While the Teen Titans character has often been portrayed as a member of a team, this series will take a different approach, focusing on her solo journey through space.
Executive producer Josie Campbell and co-executive producer Brianne Droughard are at the helm, steering Starfire into the cosmos:
“Starfire follows her adventures after she uses an ancient spaceship she discovers on her home planet of Tamaran to escape her planet and explore the stars.”
“Along the way, she’ll meet space biker Crush, plant-loving Fern, and the magical Princess Amethyst of Gemworld and, together, they will uncover the deepest reaches of the DC universe, save Space Dolphins, surf technicolor nebulas, and boldly soar into the unknown.”
It sounds like Starfire will be a wild, cosmic ride, filled with some fun deep-cut DC lore and plenty of interstellar adventure.
