James Gunn has once again sparked speculation about the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, and this time, it involves the world’s finest heroes.
A fan on Bluesky recently posted a cover of World’s Finest Comics #48, a 1948 issue featuring Superman, Batman, and Robin racing each other, and it came with the caption, “One can only hope that [James Gunn]’s vision for DCU movies somehow eventually builds towards this scene.”
Gunn’s response was a simple but telling: “Yes!”
Now, it’s not much to go on, but when the guy shaping the future of the DCU casually affirms something like this, fans take notice.
The World’s Finest series, which ran from 1941 to 1986, was all about Superman and Batman teaming up, so if Gunn’s vision truly leads to that kind of crossover, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise, but it would certainly be a major event.
Right now, both heroes have their own solo films in development. Superman is set to kick off the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters this summer, introducing David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Meanwhile, the Batman and Robin film, The Brave and the Bold, is being helmed by It and The Flash director Andy Muschietti.
Details on The Brave and the Bold are still under wraps and there are no details on casting or plot specifics, but this won’t be just another Batman origin story. Gunn previously said of the project:
“He already exists in this universe, just like when we come to the Superman movie and we see that Superman already exists, he’s already known by the people in Metropolis. We don’t need to hear the origin story again. That’s just a way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe.”
With both Superman and Batman being established in this new DCU, a crossover feels like a matter of when, not if. Whether that means a classic team-up or a clash between the two remains to be seen, but Gunn’s cryptic confirmation is sure to get fans excited for what’s ahead.
