James Gunn is once again clearing the air on DC casting rumors. It was recently reported that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe was being considered for the role of Clayface in the upcoming DCU film. However, Gunn quickly shut it down, confirming that casting hasn’t even begun.
Gunn said on social media: “As we confirmed the other day, we’re closing a deal with James to direct. Because we don’t have a director yet, we haven’t even started the casting process. Daniel is great but we certainly haven’t talked to or considered him. So this one is 100% false.”
The rumor originated from industry insider Jeff Sneider (The InSneider), who claimed Radcliffe was among two actors being considered. While Radcliffe remains a fan-favorite for dream casting, he’s currently tied up with projects like Now You See Me 3 and Batso and the Wall.
I should note that Radcliffe previously worked with director James Watkins on The Woman in Black, and it’s not too far-fetched to think they could work together again.
Clayface’s solo film has been making steady progress, with a script written by Mike Flanagan. Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran have also teased just how terrifying the villain’s story will be.
Safran said: “Clayface isn’t widely known as Penguin or Joker, but we think his story is as deeply resonant, thrilling, and even more terrifying.”
Gunn also confirmed the film will be R-rated, leaning into full-blown body horror territory. He said: “One of the things Peter and I talked about when we first got the script is if we were producing movies five years ago, like when we were doing Belko Experiment and all of that stuff, and somebody had brought us this horror script called Clayface about this guy, we would have died to have produced this movie.”
He continued: “Because it was just a really excellent body horror script. And the fact that it’s in the DCU is just a plus. Then we have Clayface: pure F –ing horror. Like totally real. Their version of that movie, it is so real and true and psychological and body horror and gross. It’s definitely R-rated.”
The film is set to hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
