Actor Jason Momoa‘s (Aquaman, See) upcoming historical epic series Chief of War has set its premiere date at Apple TV+. The drama series will debut with its first two episodes on August 1st, with new episodes dropping weekly thereafter through September 19th.
Based on true events, the nine-episode series “follows warrior Ka’iana (Momoa) as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century,” per the official logline. Along with Momoa, the cast includes Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka and Te Kohe Tuhaka.
Momoa co-created the show with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who has native Hawaiian ancestry. Both serve as executive producers, with Momoa directing the season finale. Doug Jung serves as showrunner and executive producer.
This will mark the first time Momoa has written for television. He previously co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film Road to Paloma, which was released in 2014.
He and Pa’a Sibbett also co-wrote the story for the feature The Last Manhunt, with Momoa appearing onscreen in a supporting role. Momoa starred in the feature Braven in 2018, which was co-written by Pa’a Sibbett.
