Marvel Studios is still playing the long game with its films, and Kevin Feige has apparently mapped out the next decade of mutant storytelling in the MCU.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, Feige “has told colleagues he has a 10-year plan” for the X-Men characters after they are properly and formally introduced into the MCU.
The mutants are poised to formally enter the MCU spotlight after Avengers: Doomsday (set for May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Plot details are under lock and key, but all signs point to these two mega-films serving as the official introduction of the X-Men into Marvel’s primary universe.
Mutants have already started creeping into the MCU with Ms. Marvel, andDeadpool & Wolverine brought Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine in iconic fashion, along with several other characters. Then there’s Avengers: Doomsday, which is pulling together an impressive roll call of legacy X-Men.
Those characters include Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and even Channing Tatum, returning to the role of Gambit.
Will they all survive Doomsday? Will they return for Secret Wars? Marvel’s not saying, but the excitement of seeing these characters in action again is cranked up to eleven.
What comes after that, though, is where it gets interesting. Writer Michael Lesslie, who is best known for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Assassin’s Creed, has been tapped to script a post-Secret Wars MCU film, and early reports suggest this could be the launchpad for Feige’s full mutant roadmap.
Feige previously talked about bringing the X-Men into the MCU, saying: “I think you will see that continues in our next few movies with some X-Men players that you might recognize.”
He then revealed; “Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men. Again, [it’s] one of those dreams come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”
Ryan Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a new X-Men project that would feature Deadpool alongside a mix of other characters.
As for whether Feige’s long-term plan involves brand-new actors or more legacy cast members? That remains a mystery. But given Marvel’s tendency to blend generations, it wouldn’t be surprising if they do both.
Feige isn’t rushing the X-Men into the MCU, he’s plotting, building, and planting seeds. If you’ve been waiting to see Marvel’s mutants rise again, it looks like the next decade is yours.
