Marvel Studios has always been famously tight-lipped when it comes to spoilers, but now that secrecy is at the center of a real courtroom drama.

The studio is trying to avoid handing over internal documents related to Deadpool & Wolverine in a legal dispute that, on the surface, has nothing to do with superheroes.

The whole thing stems from a bitter legal battle between actors Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively. What started as a serious harassment and retaliation lawsuit connected to the film It Ends With Us has now roped in Ryan Reynolds, and Deadpool.

Specifically, Baldoni’s legal team claims that the character “Nicepool” (a variant of Deadpool seen in the film) was created by Reynolds to mock and harass him amid their dispute. In response, they’ve subpoenaed Marvel’s internal communications about the character.

Marvel’s parent company Disney is fighting back hard. Their reasoning? If the documents are released, they could spill spoilers for the future of the MCU. According to court filings, Disney’s attorneys at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp argued:

“The requested documents are particularly sensitive because they relate to the development of a character in an ongoing movie franchise. Marvel has built the success of the MCU in large part by interconnecting storylines, plots, and characters across its titles, including ‘crossover’ events and sequels.

“Whether and how such elements will appear in upcoming, unreleased projects is the subject of much public interest, and this information is closely guarded by Marvel.”

So, even though Deadpool & Wolverine has been released, Marvel is concerned that internal notes about a character like Nicepool might reveal where the franchise is going next or who Deadpool might team up with down the line.

It’s an unusual situation to see a Marvel character dragged into a non-Marvel dispute, with the studio trying to slam the door shut before its multiverse plans leak through the cracks.

The fact that Marvel is calling Deadpool an “ongoing movie franchise” and invoking crossover potential suggests that Wade Wilson is very much part of the MCU’s future.

Meanwhile, Baldoni’s legal team isn’t backing off. They’ve said they’re willing to limit the scope of their request specifically to communications tied to Nicepool and Baldoni, and even place the documents under protective order to avoid public exposure. Since the movie has already premiered, they argue the risk to Marvel’s secrets is low.

But for Marvel, it’s not just about this movie, it’s about their long-term storytelling. Revealing how and why a variant like Nicepool came to life might seem small, but in the context of an interconnected universe, even tiny details could be revealing.

This standoff is a weird but fascinating collision between blockbuster franchise protection and Hollywood legal mudslinging. It also poses a tough question, should Marvel be allowed to withhold evidence to protect their spoiler-sensitive universe, or does the pursuit of justice take priority, even if it means the reveal of possible spoilers?

Let us know what you think! Should Marvel hand over the files, or does their spoiler defense make sense?
