Fans eager for the return of X-Men ‘97 will have to wait a little longer. While many expected Season 2 to drop in 2025, Marvel has now confirmed that the wait extends into 2026.
Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, broke the news in an interview with Collider, saying:
“Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is going to be in ’26. We’re working on it now. It’s exciting. That world of the ’90s is just… I can’t believe they let me make it.
“I grew up at Marvel, as you know, clocked a lot of time here, and I feel like I used a lot of currency to revive this thing that I loved watching after school. So, the fact that we get to play in that universe with those actors is honestly why I went into this business in the first place.”
The animated revival has been one of Marvel’s more popular recent projects, successfully continuing the legacy of the fan-favorite X-Men: The Animated Series while introducing it to a new generation.
With Season 2 deep in production and a third season already greenlit, there’s plenty more mutant action ahead, just not as soon as fans had hoped.
Season 3 is also shaping up, with What If writer and producer Matthew Chauncey taking over writing duties. He steps in for original showrunner Beau DeMayo, who was fired by Marvel before Season 1 even aired. Winderbaum previoulsy teased what’s coming next, saying:
“Right now, we are still working on X-Men ’97 season 2. It’s coming together amazingly, and the scripts for season 3 are insane.”
While X-Men ’97 is keeping the animated corner of Marvel strong, the long-awaited live-action X-Men reboot remains in development. Winderbaum acknowledged this, adding:
“That is certainly scratching the X-Men itch for me on television. And there is an X-Men feature in development right now, so that is the focus of X-Men currently.”
So, while the wait for X-Men ’97 Season 2 is longer than expected, Marvel is hoping to make the wait worth it.
