One of the big rumors that has ignited among DC fans revolves around whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman could find his way into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DCU.
The Batman director Matt Reeves has now weighed in on the rumor offering insight into his vision for the Dark Knight.
Reeves is currently focused on its highly anticipated sequel, The Batman Part 2. The film recently saw its release date shifted to October 2027, sparking fan theories that the delay might mean there’s a potential integration of Pattinson’s brooding Caped Crusader into the broader DCU.
As of now, Gunn has confirmed that Pattinson’s Batman and the DCU’s Batman are separate. We just don’t know who will be playing Batman in the MCU. But, he did say he had “contemplated” the idea.
Regardless, while speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves was asked directly about Pattinson’s possible crossover into the DCU. While he didn’t confirm or deny the rumors, Reeves emphasized his commitment to telling the story he originally envisioned.
Reeves said: “It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense. What’s been great is, there was really a kind of a story I wanted to tell — we’re calling it the Epic Crime Saga and all that — which is the thrust of what we want to do.
“It’s been important, to me, to be able to play that out. James and Peter have been really, really great about that, they’re letting us do that.”
Reeves made it clear that his current focus is solely on crafting a standout sequel. He continued:
“What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now, except that my head is down, now, about getting The Batman Part 2 shooting and to make it something really, really special, which, of course, is the most important thing.”
When Gunn was asked about this, he previously said: “I contemplate and talk about everything. I’m committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling Elseworlds stories. I want the freedom to tell Elseworlds stories.”
Whether Pattinson’s iteration of the Dark Knight will ever cross paths with Gunn’s DCU, we’ll just have to wait and see. But it really just doesn’t make sense to combine the two very different DC worlds.
The Batman: Part II is currently scheduled to be released on October 1, 2027.
