Matthew McConaughey and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto are officially getting the band back together, but this time, they’re trading Southern Gothic dread for classic pulp noir.
According to Deadline, McConaughey is in talks to star as Mike Hammer in a feature adaptation of the famed hardboiled detective book series, with Pizzolatto writing the script. This sounds like it will be a perfect project and character for the actor to take on!
The film is set up at Skydance, which recently acquired rights to Mickey Spillane’s long-running franchise co-authored by Max Allan Collins.
Hammer is a genre-defining detective character that was first introduced in I, the Jury back in 1947, and has since become a staple of American mystery fiction.
With over 250 million books sold, he’s left a cultural fingerprint that spans decades, so much so that Ian Fleming once described James Bond as “the British answer to Mike Hammer.” He also inspired characters including Dirty Harry and Jack Reacher.
This project marks a long-awaited reunion for McConaughey and Pizzolatto, whose work together on HBO’s True Detective Season 1 helped redefine prestige television. That first season earned both of them Emmy nominations, and ever since, fans and press have speculated about when the pair might collaborate again.
There were even discussions about a return to the True Detective universe, possibly with Woody Harrelson back in the mix. But according to sources, once Pizzolatto passed McConaughey the Mike Hammer script, all eyes turned toward bringing that world to life instead.
The producing team is now reportedly searching for a high-profile director to bring the gritty, hard-edged vision to life for the big screen.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger are producing alongside Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360. Max Allan Collins will serve as executive producer, with Jane Spillane co-producing.
McConaughey’s upcomiung projects include The Rivals of Amziah King, which received strong praise following its premiere at SXSW, and his upcoming Apple thriller The Lost Bus, directed by Paul Greengrass.
He’s also heading back to television for the Apple TV+ comedy Brother From Another Mother, where he’ll reunite on screen with Woody Harrelson.
