A lot of Star Wars fans believe that Disney may have been too quick to cancel The Acolyte, and now, fresh data is making their decision look even more questionable.

When the Star Wars prequel series was dropped, reports cited declining viewership as the main reason. Luminate Data initially supported that claim, showing a steady audience drop after its premiere.

But a new analysis from Parrot Analytics tells a different story, one that suggests The Acolyte had far more staying power than previously believed.

This new data was made public over the weekend, and it’s looking like Disney jumped the gun with its coacelation. Look, I wasn’t a fan of the series, but if the viewership was strong, why would they dump it?

Parrot Analytics’ study doesn’t just track Disney+ viewership numbers, it also considers a much broader range of engagement. That includes social media activity, search trends, forum discussions, and wiki interactions, all contributing to an overall “demand” metric.

The findings? The Acolyte was the second-most trending show on Disney+ in early August 2024, which is two months after its premiere and right when Disney decided to cancel it.

The report states: “This level of demand places The Acolyte in an elite category, illustrating the show’s potential not just for viewership but also for valuable insights that can inform content decisions, acquisitions, and distribution strategies.”

While Parrot’s data does acknowledge that interest has since declined, the fact that the series was still generating so much attention long after its debut challenges the idea that it bombed with viewership.

A couple of months ago, it was also reported that The Acolyte was the second most-watched on Disney+ with a massive 2.7 billion minutes viewed.

From the moment it was announced, The Acolyte faced relentless online attacks. When the show was officially canceled, many fans suspected that this toxic response played a role in Disney’s decision. Now, with this new data, those suspicions feel more valid.

Parrot’s findings suggest that The Acolyte was still performing well among general audiences, despite the loud negativity in certain circles. Disney may have placed too much weight on vocal detractors rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Co-chairman of Disney Entertainment Alan Bergman previously revealed why they decided not to keep the series going, saying: “We were happy with our performance, but it wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a season two. So that’s the reason why we didn’t do that.”

As it stands, The Acolyte remains canceled, and Disney has shown no signs of reversing course. But this new data throws a wrench in the narrative that the show was a flop.
